Burnside Ambrose 1824 - 1881

Ambrose Burnside signature clip, PSA/DNA slabbed.

PSA/DNA slabbed Ambrose Burnside (1824-1881) signature clip graded NM - MT 8. Cream paper fragment signed and inscribed by Burnside as "Very truly yours, A.E. Burnside". In near fine condition, with expected vertical paper fold, light pencil inscription below signature, and minor discolored areas verso. The signature clip measures 4.5" x 2.5" while the slab measures 7.25" x 4.25".

Ambrose Burnside tried his hand at soldiering, firearms manufacturing, and politics before mustering a volunteer Rhode Island regiment at the outbreak of the Civil War. From the May 1861 Battle of the First Bull Run to the April 1865 Confederate surrender, Burnside served in a leadership capacity in the Armies of the Ohio and Potomac, eventually being appointed Major General. In addition to commanding forces in such epic battles as Antietam, Fredericksburg, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania, and later serving as Governor of and Senator from Rhode Island, Ambrose Burnside is also celebrated for his distinctive style of bushy side whisker now known as the sideburn.
