Bulger James "Whitey" 1929 -

"Whitey" Bulger, convicted murderer and organized Boston crime boss, signs a photograph of the Alcatraz mess hall with a lengthy description. Also accompanied by a photograph of the South Boston Korean War Memorial Honor Roll of 20 soldiers who were killed in Korea, with Bulger's lengthy remembrance of three soldiers.

Photograph signed "James Whitey Bulger 1428 AZ" verso with lengthy autograph note verso. Color, 5" x 3.5". Photograph of inmates eating in the Alcatraz mess hall. Bulger served at Alcatraz from 1959-1962; his Alcatraz prison number was 1428. Fine condition.

In full: "Alcatraz Mess Hall around 1962. Just before closing the prison - they took out the 10 man wooden tables and put in these 4 men tables. I prefer the 10 man tables. Notice men avoid camera - segregation in that prison - Looks like one of the convicts is playing a guitar - we had a prison Band - called 'The Rockers' Food was good if not ewe would 'Raise Hell' - get penalized, then food got better. On ceiling tear gas container that could be remotely controlled! Bad for ones apetite."

With an unsigned photograph with lengthy autograph note verso. Color, 4" x 6". Picturing a plaque: "South Boston / Korean War Memorial / Honor Roll" listing 20 soldiers "They Will Always Be Remembered". Fine condition.

Bulger writes about three of the 20. In full: "Paul Foley one of my best friends - we grew up in the South Boston Housing Project. Paul was a real honest kid joined the Marines - in a air craft carrier in the Medit, - Great Duty - see the World. Korean War broke out. Paul re-enlisted to get sent into combat in Korea - Died there after a few days - Devastated his parents - Sad - Death is Final! Joe Thompson another in the projects well we all hung out on the street corner - re enlisted into 187 Reg. Combat Team - jumped into Korea Good Friday K.I.A. on Easter Sunday. Parents devastated turned to alcohol - Joe was the only child. Joe Toomey - my sisters husband - Grad. from West Point 'Cass of 48' many of them died in Korea - Bloody War 3 to 5 hundred a week killed. Joe only son in family no children - the parents & wives are also casualties in these wars - and it goes on - Sad".
