Timothy Pickering's Accounting Ledger, Newburgh, New York, dated November 17, 1783, one week before the British evacuation of New York City on November 25, 1783, which marked the end of British occupation and the effective conclusion of the Revolutionary War. The ledger reflects the administrative and logistical efforts required during the war's conclusion. Payments recorded here for supplies, transportation, and services indicate the final wrap-up activities of the Continental Army. Many names listed hold significant historical importance, but are highlighted by "M. Gen Steuben" (Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben), "Col. David Cobb", "Major Gibbs" (Caleb Gibbs) & "Gen'l Knox" (Henry Knox). Just above the ledger, Receipt no 189 is boldly signed as "Timothy Pickering" recording a $23 transaction involving "public horses" during the end of the Revolutionary War. In fine condition with some toning and paper loss. The document measures 8" x 12.5."

General Steuben: Likely referring to Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a Prussian military officer who played a key role in training American troops during the Revolutionary War.

Col. David Cobb: David Cobb was a Revolutionary War officer and aide-de-camp to General George Washington. His name on this list could indicate involvement in military logistics or supplies.

Major Gibbs: Possibly refers to Caleb Gibbs, who served as a major and was captain of the Commander-in-Chief's Guard, a protective unit for George Washington during the war.

Gen'l Knox: Likely General Henry Knox, who was a senior military officer of the Continental Army and later the first U.S. Secretary of War.

Dated November 17, 1783, in Newburgh, New York, this ledger captures a pivotal moment at the close of the American Revolutionary War, occurring just a week before the British evacuation of New York City on November 25. Newburgh served as a crucial base for General George Washington and the Continental Army during the war's final years, witnessing the famous Newburgh Conspiracy earlier that year, where Washington quelled unrest among officers over unpaid wages. This document reflects logistical and financial operations as the Continental Army prepared for demobilization and the peaceful transition to civilian governance, with Washington overseeing these final military actions before formally resigning his commission in December.

Timothy Pickering was a prominent American statesman and military officer who played key roles during and after the American Revolutionary War. Born in 1745, he served as an officer in the Continental Army and was involved in various logistical operations, including overseeing military supplies as Quartermaster General under George Washington. Known for his organizational skills, Pickering later held significant political positions in the early U.S. government, including serving as Secretary of War, Secretary of State, and Postmaster General under Presidents Washington, Adams, and Jefferson. He was a strong Federalist and a vocal advocate for a strong central government, often clashing with political figures like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Pickering's influence extended into his later years as a Senator from Massachusetts, where he became a staunch opponent of the War of 1812. His legacy includes his contributions to shaping the logistical and administrative foundations of the new American government, as well as his fierce loyalty to Federalist principles.
