1st Blood of Revolutionary War, Map of Canal from the Trent to the Mersey
Map
A large foldout map entitled, "A Plan of the Grand Canal from the Trent to the Mersey", from the July 1771 issue of "The Gentleman's Magazine", 1p, 8.75" x 17". Engraved by London map seller and draughtsman John Lodge (1735-1796), encompassing the canal network of Cheshire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire. At center is a distance chart from Preston Brook to the Derwent Mouth. Dated at upper left: "Gent. Mag. July. 1771". Expected folds and creases, with some separation at top edge. Faint ink offsetting from being folded. Chipping to right edge, not affecting any text. In near fine condition.

The full July 1771 issue of "The Gentleman's Magazine" included a stunning engraving of the Iceland Falcon, which is not present here, but if you look closely, you can see the ghost impression of the falcon on the verso of the here offered map!

WITH: The front page of "The Gentleman's Magazine", 1p, front and verso, 5.5" x 8.75", London, July 1771. By Sylvanus Urban, the pseudonym for Edward Cave (1691-1754), who founded the magazine in 1731. Features an attractive engraving of St. John's Gate. Age toning, mostly isolated to margins. Chipping to edges. Creasing and pinholes at left from previous binding. In near fine condition.

On the inside of the title page, headlined "American Affairs", a report on what some historians describe as the first shedding of blood in the war for American independence. From "Newburn, North Carolina", in part: His Excellency, the Governor, having reached Hillsborough with about 1,300 troops, found the Regulators were about 40 miles above him, embodied and in arms, he immediately marched to attack them in case they should refuse to comply with the terms...which were to give up their principals, lay down their arms & swear allegiance to his Majesty...his Excellency received a messenger with terms...but they being wholly inadmissible, he marched..." The ensuing battle would later become known as the Battle of Alamance, which took place on May 16, 1771. This page also includes reports from Boston and Cambridge concerning relations with England.
