Description:

Signed 1st Ed., 2nd Issue of Bram Stoker's Iconic Novel "Dracula." Outstanding Rarity!

A signed first edition, second issue of Bram Stoker's iconic work "Dracula" (Westminster: Archibald Constable and Co., 1897). A later printing, with no publisher's catalog and a single leaf at the back advertising "The Shoulder of Shasta." Twelvemo, ix, 390pp. Signed on the front free end page: "Bram Stoker/ 15 Decr. 1899." Dedicated to "Hommy-Beg," aka fellow novelist, Hall Caine. Original yellow cloth binding with stamped red lettering. Deckled page edges. The volume has significant wear, soiling, scratching, and imperfections to the covers. The corners and spine edges are rubbed and bumped. Cracked spine which is beginning to separate from text block. Minor chipping to the internal page edges. Light toning and foxing to internal pages. Boldly signed by Stoker. Although this issue is a bit worn and soiled, it remains a very desirable and important copy of one of the greatest horror stories of all time.

According to Bram Stoker's son, the idea for Dracula was born out of a nightmare that Stoker had, brought on by eating too much lobster. Today, over 125 years since it was first published, Stoker's "Dracula" continues to capture the imagination and influence a great deal of our media. The publication of the first edition of "Dracula" has a striking yellow cover, which at the time was synonymous with the more adventurous and risqu' elements of Victorian society. Yellow binding had been used for disreputable French novels, and in Oscar Wild's novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" the titular character is seduced by the contents of a yellow book. By publishing "Dracula" with a yellow cover, the publishers were deliberately aligning the novel with more experimental, possibly controversial, forms of literature.
