Description:

Hunter Thompson 1963 TLS From Brazil

Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005). Typed Letter Signed, 1p, composed on an aerogram with his handwritten signature "H. S. Thompson" on the address panel of the sheet postmarked March 15, 1963. Letter measures approximately 8" x 11", with uneven right edge due to aerogram format. Expected folds, toning and light soiling. In very good condition.

Written to friend Paul Semonin, Thompson is "in a great funk" for having to continue his reporting work in South America. In part: "Just received sailing instructions from Observer, saying hie [sic] on to Santiago, Lima, Quito, Bogota, Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico City at all possible speed. They figure 3 months, but to me it looks like 3 years. All those fucking countries again'After Mexity I am supposed to go back to Washington 'for talks.' I know what I am going to talk about & it is going to be about six moving months in the USA. I think I made this clear to them on the phone last week, but I also know they want me to come back down here. But right now I need a break from the spics and I need it bad. Maybe Copenhagen. What I really need is to shoot a few crows & drive long distances & not read newspapers. Sandy will depart Rio as soon as I can collect what various people owe me. The Obs is advancing me 400 to get moving, so I have no excuse there. I advise you to keep out of this town unless you are rich. I have aged ten years in this past one, & when you see me you'll believe it. We have a lot to talk on. And it is going to take something critically decent to cure me of the great funk I've fallen into. At the moment I have no phone, no kitchen, no hot water, and not much hope. I am living in a world of cracks, breaks, fizzles, lies, treachery, & overall thirdrateness. My desire to get out is at the point of desperation. It came as a terrible shock to pick up the phone and be sentenced to 3 more months. With luck. Anyway, [Jo] Hudson is now in Big Sur & receiving letters'I am thinking seriously of linking up in Trinidad, con Sandy. But this is tentative too. What I need now is a taste of what this past year has convinced me is a way of life that is being phased out of this world. I am turning into a mossback'H".
