Fillmore Millard 1800 - 1874 Millard Fillmore Twice-Signed Book "The American Revolution" with marginal notes in his hand correcting Thomas Jefferson's age when he first took his seat in the Continental Congress after Bunker Hill On December 12, 1853, Millard Fillmore purchased the first five volumes of "Bancroft's History of the United States" for a total of $10. He purchased this volume, Volume VIII (Volume II of "The American Revolution), published in 1860, on July 7, 1860.

Book, "The American Revolution" by George Bancroft. Volume II. 475pp, 6" x 9". Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1860. Signed vertically on the inside cover "Millard Fillmore / July 7. 1860." and "Millard Fillmore / July 7. 1860 / I Š—– C" on the title page opposite the frontispiece of Thomas Jefferson, adding the book's location on his library shelf. Stamped "E.J. Fillmore" on the lower edge of inside cover. Brown cloth. Rubbed; faded spine. Gilt lettered on spine: "Bancroft's / History / of the / United States / Vol. VIII." At the base of the spine, stamped in gold around an eagle: "Westward the star of empire takes its way." Very Good.

Millard Fillmore has made two pencil notations (here in single quotes) correcting George Bancroft in the text on page 31: "Thomas Jefferson, Š—…x' then thirty Š—…2' years of age, entered congressŠ—_" In the lower margin, Fillmore has written in pencil: "x Born April 2d 1743 Š—– consequently 32 years old." In history books, Jefferson's birth is listed as April 13, 1743. In 1752, the Julian ("Old Style") Calendar was replaced by the Gregorian Calendar which added 11 days to dates prior to its adoption. At that time Jefferson's April 2, 1743, birth date was adjusted to the "New Style" date of April 13, 1743.
