Both President Millard Fillmore, and his second wife, Caroline Fillmore, were life members of the Buffalo Orphan Asylum, and were listed as such within the pamphlet. At the time of the pamphlet publication, President Fillmore was listed as deceased.

Buffalo Orphan Asylum, Warren, Johnson & Co. Buffalo, 1874. Soft wrap pamphlet/book about the Buffalo Orphan Asylum, its charter, amendments and by laws, including a list of the officers. Under the Report, on page 5, the overall status of the organization was identified as 'It is now nearly thirty - eight years since the organization of "The Buffalo Orphan Asylum", for the purpose of protecting, relieving and education orphan and destitute children in the city of Buffalo. By reason of its age and past record , the Asylum is fairly entitled to the confidence and patronage of this growing city Š—_ Thousand of orphans and poor children have found within its enclosure a home and loving hearts to care for them Š—_ '

When evaluating the effectiveness of this nineteenth century institution, it is important to remember that at the time of its establishment the alternatives to the Buffalo Orphan Asylum for homeless children were few, and perhaps less accommodating. The children there were provided shelter, food, education and spiritual guidance. It was reported that as many as 50 children would reside within the asylum at any one time.

A wonderful scarce signature of Fillmore's second wife, whom he had married in 1858. As both of the Fillmores were identified life members of this charity, it evokes an awareness of their passion for this cause.
