Military Archive 5 ALS: R. Anderson, J. K. F. Mansfield, & L. Thomas 

A group of five letters written by or to prominent officers and generals in the Civil War. Two of the letters are war-dated., with the group dating from 1841-1865. Includes autograph letters signed by Robert Anderson, Joseph K.F. Mansfield, and Lorenzo Thomas, as well as a letter written to Samuel G. French. All with flattened mail fold and varying degrees of toning and soiling. All with bold signatures. Please refer to the photographs for further condition information.

Includes the following:
1. Robert Anderson ALS "Robert Anderson." 2pp (front and back), measuring 7.75" x 9.75", n.p., dated August 13, 1841. Addressed to Brigadier General Abraham Eustis. Written below a manuscript copy of Special Orders No. 57, from Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas. Anderson writes to inform Eustis that he will accompany General Scott to the Northwest Frontier and discusses his prospects for promotion and general other military affairs.
2. Francis Taylor ALS "Francis Taylor." 1p, measuring 7.5" x 9.75", Fort Adams, dated August 3, 1844. Addressed to Lieutenant Samuel G. French, concerning an upcoming Artillery board meeting.
3. Joseph K. F. Mansfield ALS "Jos. K. F. Mansfield." 1p of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 10", Fort Pulaski, Louisiana, dated March 8, 1845. Addressed to Henry Brainerd, concerning the necessity of a shipment of stone from the Staten Island Quarry as soon as possible.
4. Lorenzo Thomas ALS "L. Thomas." 3pp of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 8", Vicksburg, dated March 26, 1864. Addressed to Mrs. F.B. Shiras, a close family friend. Thomas despairs about this work trying to recruit freedmen to the Union Army, writing: "Many abominable cases come up to me until I am wearied to death and sick at heart. My days operations under the orders of the President are most unpleasant, for I see great [illegible] and oppression…There is no strong military arm to step forward to control, protect, and guide the poor blacks…"
5. Lorenzo Thomas ALS "L. Thomas." 3pp of a bifolium, measuring 5.25" x 8.5", Natchez, Mississippi, dated February 22, 1865. Addressed to Mrs. F.B. Shiras, a close family friend, detailing a near-death experience. In part: "…A few days since I made a narrow escape from death or capture by guerillas. They came within 40 yards of me and [illegible] into my boat, not discovering I was for the moment on the shore. The shot fell just short of Lorenzo as he was training his piece to them…No one was hurt and we soon drew them off…"

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses who proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third Party Shipping Option: If a third party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers.
