Miles mentions that he has been sick and unable to respond to any letters. Instead, he suggests Graham should call him to set up a meeting. Reading in full: "In reply to your letter of the 24th I have to say that I have been quite ill and could not attend to my correspondence. If you will telephone me what time you can come over, I will be very glad to see you and can then return your interesting abstract."

Nelson Appleton Miles (1839-1925) served in the Civil War, the American Indian Wars, and the Spanish–American War. During the Civil War, he fought in many crucial battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville (during which he was shot in the neck and abdomen), and the Appomattox Campaign. He was appointed a major general of volunteers at the age of 26. At the conclusion of the war, Miles was commandant of Fort Monroe, Virginia, where former Confederate President Jefferson Davis was held prisoner. Miles finally retired from the army in 1903. The following year, he stood as a presidential candidate at the Democratic National Convention, where received a handful of votes but ultimately decided that he did not want the nomination. Ever a military man to the end, when the U.S. entered World War I in 1917, the 77-year-old general offered to serve, but President Woodrow Wilson declined his offer.
