Rock 'n Roll

Softbound 9-page color souvenir program inscribed and signed by American singer Marvin Gaye (1939-1984). The program, from Gaye's "Heavy Love Affair Tour 81" in the United Kingdom, was signed and inscribed in dark blue ball-point pen, "To Sheila, With affection, Marvin Gaye '81'" at the Southport Theater in Merseyside on June 28, 1981. In very good to near fine condition, with expected handling marks and weathering to the covers and binding. Program measures 8.25" x 11.625". With impeccable provenance from program's dedicatee and original owner Sheila Keatley, R&R Auctions, and with a copy of JSA Letter of Authenticity from group lot.

The program includes production credits for the UK tour, a brief biography of Gaye, reproduced pages from the artist's scrap album, and numerous photographs of the short-lived but highly successful R&B singer.

Southport was the last venue of Gaye's "Heavy Love Affair Tour". Over a two week period, Gaye had performed at Bristol, London, Ipswich, Manchester, Bradford, and Birmingham. The tour was named after Gaye's single of the same name from his album In Our Lifetime (1981). During this period, Gaye was living in Europe to avoid tax problems at home, and was also struggling with drug addiction.

Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. (known as Marvin Gaye, the "Prince of Soul" and the "Prince of Motown"), greatly influenced the twentieth-century American musical scene, first with Motown, and later with funk, R&B, and soul. Gaye produced wildly popular singles like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (1967) and "Sexual Healing" (1982), this last produced the year following the "Heavy Love Affair Tour". Gaye was fatally shot by his father just three years after this concert series, in April 1984.
