Description:

John F. Kennedy
Washington, DC, ca. 1963
JFK & LBJ Photo Signed by Both During the Last Months Before Kennedy was Assassinated
SP

John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson signed and inscribed photograph. 7.5" x 9.5" (sight); Washington, DC; circa 1963. A candid photograph of the President and Vice President, signed and inscribed by both to Cecil Stoughton, the first official White House photographer. Matted and framed to an overall size of 14" x 16.5". Slight ink smudging in Kennedy's signature; otherwise excellent condition.

Inscribed: "For Cecil Stoughton, with warmest regards, John Kennedy" and, "To Cecil Stoughton, With appreciation and high regard, Lyndon B. Johnson." Per the JFK Library website, Stoughton took this photograph of the two men walking down the driveway of the White House South Lawn on August 31, 1963 on the occasion of a ceremony for the Workmen's Compensation Commemorative Stamp. The ceremony took place at 12:05 PM on the South Lawn driveway of the White House. Given the date the photograph was taken, Kennedy's signature would have been added during the last months before his life was tragically ended on November 22, 1963.

Cecil William Stoughton (1920-2008) was an American photographer best known for serving as the first official White House photographer during the administration of President John F. Kennedy. Stoughton's tenure at the White House is particularly notable for his candid and intimate photographs of the Kennedy family. Although one of his most famous works is the photograph of Johnson taking the oath of office aboard Air Force One following Kennedy's assassination, he must also be credited for creating the visual narrative of Camelot.

Images signed by both Kennedy and Johnson are scarce. One with such an important association as well as being signed so close to Kennedy's assassination is exceptionally desirable.
