Description:

Jacqueline Kennedy
n.p., ca. November 2002
Art Rickerby Ltd. Ed. "Jackie With Glasses" Gelatin Silver Print, Ex-Arthur B. Rickerby Photo Collection
Photograph

A photograph of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (1929-1964) originally taken by Kennedy administration photographer Arthur "Art" Rickerby (1921-1972) while Jackie was undertaking her 1962 India-Pakistan Goodwill Tour. Ca. November 2002. N.p. Stated Limited Edition #25/60. The glossy, black and white gelatin silver print shows Jackie peeking at Rickerby under the guise of removing her sunglasses. Featuring Rickerby's blind-embossed facsimile signature as "Art Rickerby" outside the image field at lower right. Hand-stamped with a copyright statement verso, just above a handwritten attestation by Wanda A. Rickerby, Art's third wife and widow, as: "'Jackie with Glasses' from the Arthur B Rickerby Photo Collection Limited Edition #25 of 60 Wanda A. Rickerby Curator 11.07.02." Minor wrinkles to the upper left corner, else near fine. 10.875" x 14".

Jackie Kennedy undertook a two-week-long semi-official trip to India and Pakistan in March 1962. Jackie's trip to the Subcontinent (March 12-26, 1962) became a veritable charm offensive. The outfit which Jackie was almost certainly wearing in this photograph was an Oleg Cassini-designed pink coat with matching hat. The First Lady wore the ensemble upon her arrival at New Delhi Airport on March 12, 1962. The garment was unique not only because of its spectacular bright pink color (which U.S. Ambassador to India John Kenneth Galbraith likened to "radioactive pink"), but also because of its Indian-inspired tailoring and Nehru collar. Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who greeted the First Lady at the airport, noticed Jackie's homage to India and was apparently captivated.
