Description:

John F. Kennedy
[Paris, France], ca. 1961
JFK & Jackie in Oleg Cassini Signed Photo, Presented to Artist Who Painted Mural on WH Swimming Pool
Signed photograph

A gorgeous presentation photo of John and Jacqueline Kennedy on their State visit to Paris, presented to artist Bernard Lamotte (1903-1983). Measures 11" x 14", [Paris, France] ca. 1961. Boldly signed in the lower right margin, "John Kennedy", and inscribed above by the First Lady: "To the Bernard Lamottes- with admiration and appreciation/ Jacqueline Kennedy". This image, captured as the couple was leaving the French Foreign Ministry on May 31, 1961, notably features Jackie in an elegant raffia lace evening gown designed by Oleg Cassini. Exhibits light offset toning to perimeter, with areas of minor staining throughout. General edge wear. Else, near fine.

The President and Mrs. Kennedy made their first transatlantic State trip in May-June 1961, with their first stop being in Paris. While there, Kennedy conferred with French President Charles de Gaulle for two days in a series of substantive meetings covering a range of international questions. The trip's success, however, came not in the private discussions of the leaders, but in the public appearances of the fashionable President and First Lady. Indeed, during a news conference at the Palais Chaillot on June 2, 1961, JFK jokingly introduced himself as "the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris."

Bernard Lamotte was a Paris-born artist, illustrator, painter, and muralist who relocated to New York in the mid-1930s. In the spring of 1962, he was commissioned by the President to create a mural of Christiansted Harbor on St. Croix, Virgin Islands for the White House pool, which is now preserved in the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum.
