Daniel Webster Signed & Personally Owned "History of the Rebellion & Civil Wars in England" Featuring His Bookplate
Signed book
A history book from the private library of New England politician Daniel Webster (1782-1852), signed by him and featuring his bookplate. The book is a hardcover copy of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, "The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England," Vol. I, Part I (Books I-III) (Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1807), iii-xxxvii, 1-446. Webster signed the volume as "D. Webster" at the upper right corner of the front loose endpaper. Webster's bookplate featuring his arms, motto, and a facsimile signature appears on the front pastedown endpaper. The front pastedown endpaper also includes a manuscript inscription and printed auction description relating to the sale of Webster's books in 1875; as well as a printed quote by Webster relating to political freedom. With original marbleized leather over board covers and a restored/replaced spine. Shelf rubbing and edge wear to covers. Expected wear including uneven toning, scattered discoloration, foxing, and edge darkening within. Else near fine. 6.125" x 10.625" x 1.625." 4to.

Webster's bookplate prominently features his coat of arms, comprised of two boar's heads flanking a rose, a rearing "demi-lion," and a plate pierced by an arrow. Webster's motto, "Vera Pro Gratis," translates to "But for Grace." The manuscript inscription found below Webster's bookplate reads: "These 6 vols. bo't at sale of Daniel Websters books at Boston, June 10, 1875 - G.A. Somerby." The Boston auction house Leonard & Co. sold the contents of the "Catalogue of the Private Library of the Late Daniel Webster" in a multi-day sale beginning June 8, 1875.

The subject matter of Webster's book probably influenced the statesman's political ideology. Historians have theorized since the mid-20th C. that the idea of political freedom articulated during the English Civil War directly influenced the ideology of the leaders of the American Revolution. The former book collector understood this important connection as well; the quote from Webster's Senate speech delivered January 26, 1830 affixed to the front pastedown endpaper explicitly states that government is dictated by the people (as opposed to a king).

Daniel Webster was one of the most revered politicians, lawyers, writers, and orators of his day. The Dartmouth College graduate represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress before serving as 14th and 19th U.S. Secretary of State under the Harrison, Tyler, and Fillmore administrations. Webster's influence was secured during the 1830s, when he represented the Northern voice of the so-called "Great Triumvirate," along with Western mouthpiece and Kentucky Senator Henry Clay and Southern spokesman and South Carolina Senator John C. Calhoun.
