The financial documents are dated ca. 1831-1835. Boston, Massachusetts. Expected age-related condition issues including flattened paper folds, isolated closed tears, and scattered minor stains. Bearing expected clerical marks including double hole punches. Else near fine and very legible. The largest item measures 7.875" x 4.875."

In chronological order, the lot is comprised of:

1. A promissory note dated April 15, 1831, signed by Webster near lower right, pledging to pay George Blake $1,000 in six months. Secretarially inscribed on watermarked paper. Endorsed by creditor George Blake verso. 7.875" x 4.875." George Blake (1769-1841), also a lawyer, was Webster's close friend and Boston neighbor.

2. A promissory note dated June 26, 1832, signed by Webster at lower right. Secretarially inscribed, in part: "For value received I promise George Blake Esqr, to pay him or order Fifteen Hundred Dollars in six months." Endorsed verso by George Blake and Nathan Hale. Minor paper loss at lower left, and several discrete edge repairs. The other signer was Nathan Hale (1784-1863), the founder of the "Boston Daily Advertiser," and its longtime publisher and editor between 1813-1863.

3. A bank check drawing on accounts held at the Office of the Bank of the United States, signed by Webster on the signature line. August 24, 1835. Boston, Massachusetts. The check was issued to "Ch on New York" in the amount of $600. 6.375" x 2.5."

Daniel Webster was one of the most revered politicians, lawyers, writers, and orators of his day. The Dartmouth College graduate represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress before serving as 14th and 19th U.S. Secretary of State under the Harrison, Tyler, and Fillmore administrations. Webster's influence was secured during the 1830s, when he represented the Northern voice of the so-called "Great Triumvirate," along with Western mouthpiece and Kentucky senator Henry Clay and Southern spokesman and South Carolina senator John C. Calhoun.
