Brigadier General Jonathan Moulton Concerning Enlisting "agreeable & good officers."

A letter from Brigadier General Jonathan Moulton concerning enlisting "agreeable & good officers." 1p, measuring 7.75" x 10.5", Hampton, New Hampshire, dated June 27, 1771. Signed "Jona. Moulton" and addressed to Captain Eliphalet Merrill. The letter has flattened folds with some separations and paper loss. Light toning, soiling, and foxing throughout. Boldly signed.

In part:
"…I have in my Letter to the Ensign desired him to ride over my House next Tuesday in the Afternoon - shou'd take it as a favor if you wou'd advise with him on some other Gentlemen in your Parish for to come to Hampton with him, that will be most likely to make both agreeable & good officers. You remember doubtless our conversation concerning Cornt. Brown's being promoted. I take him to be a very good sort of a man & I believe wou'd make a pretty officer, & shou'd be glad if he might be promoted…"

Jonathan Moulton (1726-1787) began his life as an indentured servant to a cabinetmaker, winning his freedom in 1745. He worked as a silversmith before being appointed as a captain of a ranger company in the NH Militia and served during the King George's War and French and Indian War. For his service, he was granted large tracts of land in Moultonborough (his namesake), New Hampton, Tamworth, Center Harbor, and Sandwich. When the American Revolution broke out, Moulton was selected as a member of the Committee of Safety as well as commissioned as Colonel of the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment of Militia. He and his men fought at the Battle of Saratoga, preventing the British from invading Canada.
