Description:

1807 "The Balance and Columbian Repository" Discussing the Slave Trade

An issue of "The Balance and Columbian Repository", No. 8, Volume VI, pp. 57-64. 8pp, measuring 9.25" x 11.5", Hudson, New York, dated February 24, 1807. Printed by Harry Croswell. With a lengthy article on the proceedings in the House in connection with Peter Early's work to amend a bill to prohibit the importation of slaves in the United States. Reading in part: "Mr. Early's bill against the slave trade…The southern members are decidedly hostile to it and attack outrageously, denouncing rebellion and civil war in the event of its passing in its present form. The bill is, however, valiantly defended by those prime orators, Smilie and Sloane, and there is no telling what will be the result…For it are Mr. Sloane, Bidwell, and Smilie; and against it are Holland and Alston…" The newspaper has flattened folds, with light toning, foxing, and soiling throughout. Minor chipping at the spine. Very good overall.

The Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves of 1807 was first introduced in March 1805 by Massachusetts congressman Joseph Bradley Varnum. Despite being tabled for two years, President Jefferson supported the bill in his December 1806 annual message to Congress, stating slavery upheld "violations of human rights". The Act was finally signed into law on March 2, 1807, making all importation of slaves from abroad, even on foreign ships, a federal crime. Despite this, domestic slave trading was unaffected by the 1807 law, and actually increased within the country, along with persistent smuggling of slaves.
