Description:

Archive of 3 Religious Documents Signed, Dating from Ca. 1687 to 1719

A group of three religious documents signed by three English religious figures, Bishop Henry Compton, Archbishop Lancelot Blackburne, and Bishop Edward Fowler. All of the documents have been mounted along their left edge within three archival folders, all measuring 10.75" x 15" overall; each could easily be removed if desired. Documents included are as follows:

Edward Fowler Autograph Letter Signed. 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 6.5" x 8.5", no place, dated September 8, 1687. Addressed to Reverend Dr. Hicks, Dean of Worchester and signed "Edw. Fowler." Fowler explains his reasoning behind not meeting with Hicks, due to a visit from the King. The second page of the letter has a list of crossed out items. With flattened folds, light edge toning and soiling. Paper loss and rough edges due to the seal being broken. Boldly signed. Edward Fowler (1632-1714) served as Bishop of Gloucester from 1691 until his death in 1714.

Lancelot Blackburne Document Signed. 1p, measuring 7.5" x 11.75", [Exeter], dated September 19, 1719. Signed "Lan: [red wax seal] Exon." An official document, appointing "Mr. Edward Gilbert…my true & lawful Attorney for me & in my name to transfer to Mrs. Emma Gilbert of the parish of St. Andrews in Plymouth the sum of five hundred pounds…" The document has been mounted at the left edge to an archival page of the same size as backing. With flattened folds and light foxing. Toning and dampstaining at the right and bottom edges. Red wax seal is intact. Ink burn in the signature has resulted in some small holes, which have been repaired on verso with archival tape. Boldly signed. Lancelot Blackburne (1658-1743) became Archbishop of York in 1724 and served until his death. In 1681, Blackburne travelled to the West Indies and spent some time in Nevis, where, some strongly believe, he sailed with a group of buccaneers either as a chaplain or as a pirate himself!

Henry Compton Autograph Letter Signed. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 6" x 7.25", no place, dated February 10, no year Signed "H: London" and addressed to Francis North as Lord Keeper. Compton writes to North concerning a new appointment, that of Mr. Long, a chaplain. Mounted in the archival folder along with a portrait of Compton and examples of his seal and signature (taken from an original owned by John Thane). With flattened mail folds. Light toning and soiling throughout. Paper loss on the address page from where the seal was broken has been repaired with contemporary paper. Henry Compton (1632-1713) served as Bishop of London from 1675-1713, having previously been made the Bishop of Oxford in 1674.
