Archive of 4 Religious Documents Signed, Dating from 1726-1870

A group of four documents signed by three English religious figures, of which two have been signed by Beilby Porteus, and the other two signed by Frederick Denison Maurice or Edward Waddington. All of the documents have been mounted along their left edge within three archival folders, all measuring 10.75" x 15" overall; each could easily be removed if desired. Documents included are as follows:

Edward Waddington Autograph Letter Signed. 3pp of a bifolium, measuring 6.25" x 8.25", Eton College, dated November 11, 1726. Addressed to an unnamed fellow reverend and signed "Edw. Chichester." Waddington writes about his friend finding a living in Bury, in part: "I am very glad to hear that you are come to Bury. I hope in a little time you will find a convenience there or very near for yr family too. I heartily wish I could answer the remaining contents of yr letter entirely to yr satisfaction; but I don’t apprehend that in the present state of things I have the power to do it…" Edward Waddington (1670-1731) was bishop of Chichester from 1724-1731. With flattened mail folds, toning, soiling, and foxing. Small tears and holes have been repaired with tape. Boldly signed.

Frederick D. Maurice Autograph Letter Signed. 4pp of a bifolium, measuring 4.5" x 7.25", Torquay, dated February 10, 1870. Addressed to "My dearest Jules" and signed "FD Maurice." Providing travels news and plans, and mentions a proposed trip to the Palace Gardens. Accompanied by a clipped letter, signed twice by what appears to be a Mr. H. Marshall, who directs the recipient to send any further letters to the Conservative Club in London. John Frederick Denison Maurice (1805-1872) was an Anglican theologian, author, and one of the early founders of Christian socialism. Minor toning and flattened folds. A spot of soiling on the second clipped letter.

Beilby Porteus Autograph Letter Signed. 2pp of a bifolium, 7.25" x 9", Lambeth, dated March 23, 1775. Signed "B Poreteus" and addressed to Reverend Carlyon in Truro, Cornwall. Concerning the pricing of publishing volumes of sermons and his opinions on various publications, Porteus writes, in part: "The expense of printing a volume of sermons of the same size, paper & type as the Archbishop…will be about 40£. The number of pages in 1/3p Section volumes one with another is about 400. I hear nothing of Dr. Beatties 4th volume. He has prepared an answer to Dr. Priestly, but how soon he means to publish it he does not tell me. I have some hopes of seeing him here in May…" Flattened folds and foxing. Small separations present at the edges. Some tearing and paper loss from where the wax seal was broken. Boldly signed.

Beilby Porteus Autograph Letter Signed. 1p, 9" x 7.25", Fulham, dated December 3, 1806. Signed "B London" and addressed to The Harvard Printers. Reading in part: "I now enclose to you the past proof sheet with the Title Page & Table of Contents corrected…This is the 'Summary of the Principal Evidence of the Xn Religion…'" Beilby Porteus (1731-1809) served as Bishop of Chester and Bishop of London. He was a leading abolitionist in England and worked alongside William Wilberforce in the fight to abolish the slave trade. Foxing throughout, with flattened folds and tears at edges. Soiling along the edges as well. A small hole is present where the seal was broken.
