Description:

Archive of 3 Religious Documents Signed, Dating from 1636 to 1683

A group of three religious documents signed by three English religious figures, Bishop Henry Compton, Archbishop Lancelot Blackburne, and Bishop Edward Fowler. All of the documents have been mounted along their left edge within three archival folders, all measuring 10.75" x 15" overall; each could easily be removed if desired. Documents included are as follows:

Dr. Joseph Hall Document Signed. 1p, measuring 7.5" x 11.5", no place, dated April 26, 1636. Signed "Jos: Exon" as Bishop of Exeter. A legal statement, written on behalf of Elizabeth, wife of Vincent Cormish, relaying information about purchasing yards of serge (durable woolen fabric or thread) from an individual Henry Moore. Elizabeth also signs the document with a mark. Flattened folds, with light foxing and soiling present. Adhesive staining along the left edge of the document. Boldly signed. Joseph Hall (1574-1656) was an English bishop, sometimes referred to as "The English Seneca". He was a prolific writer and published "Contemplations on Principal Passages of Scripture", "Christian Meditations", along with numerous devotionals.

Francis Turner Autograph Letter Signed. 3pp of a bifolium, measuring 6" x 8.25", Cambridge, dated December 28, 1678. Signed "Fran: Turner" and addressed to Dr. Burnet (possibly Gilbert Burnet). Turner writes about his recent travels and promotion, in part: "…I have been out of England with my mistress the Princess in Holland…I took a Diversion up into High Germany. I returned indeed in the beginning of November, but within one day after my coming home I found my selfe chosen Vice Chancellor of this University (Cambridge), since which I have scarce enjoyed one minutes rest…Tis true indeed the times are grown so turbulent as will make a provision of this kind the harder to be obtained…" Turner also advises Burnet on what studies his son should take up, including High German, French, Spanish, and Italian. Flattened mail folds and toned edges. Francis Turner (1637-1700) served as Bishop of Ely and was chaplain to the Duke of York before he became King James II and VII. Despite earning the favor of the king, Turner still petitioned against the Declaration of Indulgence set forth by James II in 1687. He would also later be one of nine bishops who refused the oath of allegiance to William of Orange.

William Thomas Autograph Letter Signed. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7" x 9", Worchester, dated October 25, 1683. Signed "Wm Thom:" and addressed to Henry Thinne. A letter of recommendation written on behalf of a Mr. Pritchard, the bearer of the letter. With mail folds and edge toning. Light soiling and foxing throughout. Tears around the wax seal. William Thomas (1613-1689) was a Welsh Anglican bishop who served as Bishop of St. David's and Bishop of Worchester. During the English Civil War, Thomas was removed from his living at Laugharne, but his position was restored in 1660.
