WWI Era "Banner of Freedom" Showcasing Close Ties of France & US and Commemorating the Dec. of War against Germany. A Gorgeous Poster!
Broadside
Original 1918 patriotic poster / broadside entitled "The Banner of Freedom," designed, painted, and copyrighted by Henry N. Hays. The artwork was created during the fervor of World War I and reflects a powerful message of unity and resolve between the United States and France against "Kaiserism" in a struggle for freedom and democracy while commemorating the declaration of war by the United States against Germany. Some toning and markings, else fine condition. Measures 11" x 14."

The central image features two crossed flags, the American flag and the French tricolor, symbolizing the unity of these nations. Above the flags, the year "1776" is boldly printed, signifying American independence, while "1917" below reflects the year of the United States' entry into World War I. Images of iconic leaders are prominently displayed, with George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette positioned above and Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson below, representing the enduring bond and shared democratic ideals between the two countries. Flanking the flags are symbols of national pride and resistance, including the Statue of Liberty on the left and Joan of Arc on the right, signifying freedom and courage. Portraits of prominent military leaders, General Pershing of the U.S. and Marshal Joffre of France, are set in medallions, emphasizing their roles in the Allied war effort. In a show of global solidarity, smaller banners list other Allied nations involved in the war, such as Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, China, Japan, Panama, Peru, and Portugal on the left, and Britain, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Russia, Rumania, Serbia, and Siam on the right. The bold proclamation "They Shall Not Pass!" in red at the bottom of the poster echoes the resolute attitude of the Allies, famously used as a slogan by French forces in the war.
