Carl Mydans (1907-2004) was an American photographer most known for his work with Life magazine during World War II. He first joined Life in 1936 as one of its earliest staff photographers and pioneering photojournalists. During the second World War, Mydans traveled with his wife over 45,000 miles throughout Europe and Asia, capturing images of both life and death. While working in the Philippines in 1941, the couple was captured by Japanese forces and interred for nearly two years, whereupon they were released as part of a 1943 prisoner exchange.

After their release, Mydans was sent back into Europe for pivotal battles in Italy and France, but later went back to the Philippines in 1944 to cover MacArthur's return. The general had appeared in Mydans' other memorable image from that assignment, watching as a Japanese delegation signed the official documents of surrender on September 4, 1945.
