World War II

Impressive archive of 36 glossy black and white Associated Press war dated photos capturing key moments between 1943 and the springtime of 1945 in the United States, England, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Norway, Denmark, and Japan. Nearly all are stamped with official AP markings, and all are accompanied by typed newsprint captions. In near fine condition, with expected minor surface wear to photos. Some mounting traces verso. Caption sheets are toned overall and some are detached but included. Most photos measure 8" x 10".

The most dramatic photos of the collection depict the days preceding V-E Day. AP photographer Dan Grossi snapped a photograph entitled "German Prisoners of FFI" that was released from the censor in May 1945. The photograph shows newly liberated French resistants kicking Nazis prisoners on parade in Jouy-en-Josas on August 24, 1944, a day before the liberation of Paris.

A photo series released May 11, 1945 shows the execution of Richard Jarczyk as a Nazi spy in late April 1945 in Kitzingen, Germany. Under the headlines "Execution of a Nazi Spy" and "Death of a Nazi Spy", the four photos show the moments prior, during, and after Jarczyk's execution. "Richard Jarczyk of the 36th Volks Grenadier Division, caught posing as a Pole and spying behind U.S. Seventh Army lines, is asked by an American officer (top) if he wishes to make a statement before his execution. Below, he is tied to an execution post". The next caption in the sequence reads in part: " Richard Jarczyk … slumps down before the fire of an execution squad (top) and is pronounced dead (bottom) by two army doctors".

Nine photos depict German surrrender ceremonies in Reims and Berlin on or around May 7, 1945, and four photos depict V-E celebrations in England and Moscow. Famous individuals represented include: the British Royal Family; Winston Churchill; U.S. Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, Carl Spaatz, and James Doolittle; Admiral Karl Doenitz; Paula Hitler Wolf; and Otto Skorzeny, the would-be assassin of Eisenhower. Other photos feature U.S. troops on Okinawa, Mickey Rooney entertaining soldiers in Germany, female munitions workers, surrendered German submarines, British troops feted in Norway, views of Hitler's burned-out Berchtesgaden home, and much more!

This sensational archive of period glossy press photographs, with original newsprint captions, documents some of the most emotional moments of World War II!
