Description:

Wise Henry

1pp ALS on unmarked cream stationery inscribed and signed by Virginia politician and Civil War combatant Henry A. Wise as “Henry A. Wise” at center. "U.S. Rep. from Va." is inscribed in another hand, probably that of Wise's letter recipient. In near fine condition with overall toning and a few minor discolored spots. Letter measures 7.5” square.

On October 13, 1841 from Philadelphia, then Virginia congressman Henry A. Wise wrote a courtly letter addressed to autograph seeker “Wm D. Northend Esqr”. “Dear Sir, You are at liberty to add to your collection of autographs the name of – yours respectfully, Henry A. Wise”. In the fall of 1841, Wise was a Virginia congressman but was probably in Philadelphia visiting his second wife’s family. Wise had recently married Sarah Sergeant (1817-1850), daughter of fellow Pennsylvania congressman John Sergeant (1779-1852), in November 1840.

Like many statesmen, Henry A. Wise (1806-1876) began his career as a lawyer but then transitioned into politics. Wise represented Virginia’s 8th and 7th Congressional Districts between 1833 and 1844. He was appointed U.S. Minister to Brazil by 10th U.S. President John Tyler (1790-1862) in August 1844 before his ignominious recall three years later. Wise served as the 33rd Governor of Virginia between 1856 and 1860, authorizing the execution of abolitionist and Harper’s Ferry raider John Brown (1800-1859), among other actions. A zealous secessionist, Wise was appointed a Brigadier General of the Confederate Army despite his lack of military background; he commanded troops in North Carolina and Virginia.
