Woodrow Wilson Aboard U.S.S. George Washington, Post WWI Treaty of Versailles, Ex-Forbes
Photograph
A photographic print showing 28th U.S. President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) taken aboard the U.S.S. George Washington (ID - 3018) on his return trip from France, ca. June 29 - July 8, 1919. Wilson is pictured at center wearing a dark trench coat and tweed flat cap, seated near the ship's commanding officer, Captain Edward McCauley, and the president's physician, Rear Admiral Cary Grayson. The ship's officers and crew -standing at attention, in the crow's nest, even straddling the yard arms - surround the entourage on all sides. Signed in the negative as "E. Muller Jr. N.Y." at lower right, referring to U.S. Navy official photographer Robert Enrique Miller (1881-1921). The sepia-colored photograph is matted and framed behind glass, not examined out of the frame. Expected wear including minor unobtrusive wrinkles, else near fine. A typed label on the frame backing with Forbes accession number A82068B-P, with a Forbes storage facility tag. The sight size of the photograph is 13" x 10.25." The mahogany-finished frame measuring 21" x 18.375" x 1.125" shows isolated scuffs and scratches, else near fine. Ex-Collection of Steve Forbes.

President Wilson and American peace conference delegates made a total of four trips to France aboard the U.S.S. George Washington between December 1918 and July 1919 to negotiate the Treaty of Versailles and promote the League of Nations. The U.S.S. George Washington was a German-built passenger liner converted into a U.S. transport ship after war was declared in April 1917. The vessel completed 18 war-related round trips, safely carrying 48,000 passengers to Europe and 34,000 passengers to the United States, between 1917-1919. The U.S.S. George Washington was decommissioned a few months later, in Fall 1919.

President Wilson left France the day after the Treaty of Versailles - containing the all-important Covenant of the League of Nations - was signed on June 28, 1919. The Treaty of Versailles had taken more than six months to successfully negotiate. It outlined such important international political policies as disarmament; admission of war guilt; war reparations; and territorial restructuring.
