Pair of two partial-printed expense vouchers signed "W. M. Tweed" as Deputy Street Commissioner. 2pp, measuring 8.5" x 7" and 9" x 7.5", New York, NY, dated March 4, 1864 and August 7, 1867. The first voucher, no. 444, details the appropriation for fire machines and apparatus totaling $267.99, while the second, no. 582, expends $250.00 for the excavation of ships under dumping boards on Vesey Street. Features uneven staining, edge toning, and moderate tearing in areas. Otherwise, good condition - originating from a time of growing corruption from the notorious "Boss".

William Magear Tweed (1823-1878) was an American politician most notable for being the political boss of Tammany Hall, a Democratic organization that played a major role in the politics of 19th-century New York. He was first chosen to serve as head to Tammany's general committee in 1863, where he began to take steps toward creating an exclusive political club in addition to increasing his own personal income. Later that year, Tweed would have himself appointed as deputy street commissioner - a position which gave him considerable access to city contractors and funding.

The beginning of his downfall was marked in 1871, when the Orange Riots exposed weaknesses in the Tweed Ring's influence. He was later convicted of stealing an amount estimated in 1877 at being between $25 million and $45 million from New York City taxpayers through political corruption, although other estimates have been ranged as high as $200 million.
