George Dunton Widener (1861-1912) was an American businessman born to wealthy streetcar magnate Peter Arrell Brown Widener. When he was old enough, he joined his father's business and ultimately took over the running of the Philadelphia Traction Company. He also served on the board of directors of numerous high profile companies. Aside from business, he was also a patron of the arts and director of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Widener was aboard the RMS Titanic during its fateful maiden voyage along with his wife and son. After the ship struck an iceberg, he placed his wife and her maid Amalie Gieger in a lifeboat. The women were later rescued by the RMS Carpathia, but Widener and his son Harry and their valet Edwin Keeping perished and their bodies were never identified.
