Description:

Sherman William

Military business card, 3.5" x 2", boldly signed by William T. Sherman in black ink as "W.T. Sherman / General" on the verso of the card. The front of the card has his name, rank and place of "912 Garrison Avenue, Saint Louis, MO" with a small note in graphite if "June 17 '85" possibly a notation representing the date of the signature. A lovely piece in near fine condition with slight faded handling marks.

William Tecumseh Sherman served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the "Scorched earth" policies he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States. Sherman began his Civil War career serving in the First Battle of Bull Run and Kentucky in 1861,  where he was grazed by bullets in the knee and shoulder.

Known later in life for his "War Is Hell" address he delivered to the graduating class of the Michigan Military Academy, he expounded on his infamous phrase April 11, 1880, where he addressed a crowd of more than 10,000 at Columbus, Ohio: "There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is all hell."
