Description:

Sheridan Philip

PSA/DNA slabbed signature clip of Union Army commander Philip Sheridan (1831-1888) signed and inscribed “P.H. Sheridan, Lt General, U.S.A.”. The signature dates sometime from the period between 1869-1888, when Phillip Sheridan was a Lieutenant General. In very good to near fine condition. Part of Sheridan's inscription of his rank is slightly smeared, and there is minor mounting residue verso. The cream-colored slip measures 3.25" x 1.75" while the slab measures 5.25" x 3.125".

Philip Sheridan’s moniker “Fightin’ Phil” refers to the soldier’s pugnacity. Sheridan was a middling West Point cadet with a short temper and a bad attitude, once suspended for threatening a classmate with a bayonet. Sheridan began his thirty-year-long military career as a low-ranking officer in the antebellum Pacific Northwest, gaining experience fighting local Indians. Sheridan was quickly promoted during the first years of the Civil War, after distinguishing himself at Perryville, Stones River, and other battles. Fellow Union Army officer and future 18th U.S. President U.S. Grant (1822-1885) promoted Sheridan to command forces in the Armies of the Potomac and Shenandoah. Sheridan had only increased his reputation for ferocity by war’s end after scorching earth in Virginia. After the Civil War, Sheridan fought in the Indian Wars. He was promoted one last time, to the rank of General in the Regular Army, just two months before his death in June 1888.
