Description:

William "Grumble" Jones Signed TX Military Doc

A 1p manuscript document signed by future Confederate cavalry commander William E. Jones (1824-1864), then a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Mounted Riflemen and Acting Assistant Commandant, as "W.E. Jones" near lower left. September 25, 1852. Fort Merrill, Texas. Inscribed in a secretarial hand on laid pale blue paper. Docketed verso. Expected wear including flattened paper folds, else near fine. 7.75" x 9.75."

The invoice itemized purchases made by Private Matthew Suite of the U.S. Mounted Riflemen in advance of his "sick leave to Coopers derict [derrick?]." Private Suite purchased $4.18 1/2 worth of groceries and supplies including bacon, hard bread, beans, coffee, brown sugar, salt, vinegar, brown soap, and sperm candles. W.E. Jones' signature certified that these purchases were correct.

Jones was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the U.S. Mounted Riflemen upon graduating from West Point in 1848. In March 1852, while en route to his assignment at Fort Merrill, Jones survived a traumatic event that many historians cite as the reason for his ferociously bad temper. Jones had been traveling with his new bride Eliza "Pink" Jones née Dunn (1834-1852) when their vessel, the steamship "Independence," ran aground off Pelican Island in the Gulf of Mexico and was overwhelmed by a sudden storm. Jones's wife was one of several passengers who drowned when their lifeboat capsized.

The widowed Jones continued on to Fort Merrill, located along the Nueces River. It had been founded in March 1850 to protect settlers from Comanche raids. The U.S. Mounted Riflemen were garrisoned there until April 1853, when they were transferred to Fort Ewell, and Fort Merrill was abandoned by 1855. William E. Jones received a promotion to first lieutenant in 1854.

A decade later, Confederate Brigadier General William E. Jones was killed at the Battle of Piedmont while leading a cavalry charge on June 5, 1864.
