Description:

Gen. A. P. Hill Rare Circular After Resigning From U.S. Army, Ca. 1861!

Partial-printed DS, measuring 8" x 10", dated March 15, 1861, Washington, D.C. A printed letter and attached cover from the U.S. Coast Survey Office, boldly signed "A. P. Hill" above the title "Asst. C.S. in Charge of Office". Cover features a free postmark, dated March 19, 1861 from Washington, D.C. Hill, who resigned on March 1, 1861 to join the Confederate Army, likely pre-signed this document before leaving the position. The body of the printed letter references an 1859 report of the Coast Survey Superintendent, reading in part: "As there are frequent complaints of failure to receive documents entrusted to the mail, I take this means to advise you of the book being forwarded…", with typed signature from W. R. Palmer, Captain Topographical Engineers. Exhibits expected degrees of toning and minor discoloration to folds, not affecting writing or text, else very good. A scarce example!

Ambrose Powell Hill (1825-1865) was an American military officer, first in service to the U.S. Army from 1847-1861 and then the Confederacy starting from 1861 until his death in 1865. Before the start of the Civil War, Hill had served in the Mexican-American and Seminole Wars, but saw limited combat in either. In March 1861, after some Southern states had seceded and as the Virginia Secession Convention of 1861 met, Hill resigned his U.S. Army commission. Following Virginia's secession, he accepted the position of colonel to the 13th Infantry Regiment, later becoming one of Stonewall Jackson's ablest subordinates, distinguishing himself in the 1862 battles of Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. Hill was later killed in action on April 2, 1865 during the Battle of Petersburg, making his a rare and desirable signature among collectors.
