Description:

Gladstone William

William Gladstone, FF Envelope to Benjamin Disraeli's Sister

Handsome free franked envelope signed by British politician William E. Gladstone (1809-1898) as "W.E. Gladstone" and addressed to Miss Sarah Disraeli (1802-1859), Benjamin Disraeli's older sister, from London in the spring of 1838. Expected light weathering, else near fine, measuring approximately 5" x 3.375."

The pale blue watermarked paper fragment, possibly once part of an integral address leaf, is signed "W.E. Gladstone" at lower left and bears a "Free" crowned stamp. The letter was addressed to "Miss Disraeli, Bradenham House, High Wycombe." Benjamin Disraeli's sister Sarah resided at this address with their parents between 1829-1848. High Wycombe is located around 30 miles northwest of London.

The 60-year political career of William Gladstone left an indelible mark on Victorian domestic and foreign policy. To his supporters, he was “The People’s William”; to detractors like Benjamin Disraeli, he was “God’s Only Mistake”. A member of the Liberal Party, Gladstone served as Prime Minister for 4 terms, from 1868-1874, 1880-1885, briefly in 1886, and 1892-1894. The Conservative Disraeli served as Prime Minister for 2 terms, in 1868 and from 1874-1880, to be succeeded by Gladstone in both instances. The political rivalry between Gladstone and Disraeli was legendary, yet this free frank shows that personal relations were cordial.
