Description:

William Cowper Signed Copy of His Grandfather's Book on Logic & Rhetoric

An English translation of "The Arts of Logick and Rhetorick Illustrated by Examples taken out of the best Authors, Antient and Modern, In all the Polite Languages" (London: John Clark, Richard Hett, John Pemberton, Richard Ford, John Gray, 1728), by French Jesuit priest Father Dominique Bouhour (1628-1702). The edition is signed by British poet William Cowper (1731-1800) as "Wm Cowper" on the title page, and a bookplate belonging to Cowper's paternal grandfather and probable namesake William Cowper (died 1739) appears on the front pastedown endpaper. With original polished and diced leather boards, expertly restored and replaced spine and cover corners, and replaced pastedown and loose endpapers. Expected wear to the covers includes scuffs and isolated loss. Isolated foxing and edge darkening within, else near fine. 5.25" x 6" x 1.5." 8vo. 418pp excluding the 16pp Index.

Cowper almost certainly inherited this logic book from his grandfather William Cowper, whose ex-libris appears within. The bookplate shows the Cowper family's heraldic crest featuring three gold rings above three red martlets, or mythical birds, and the Cowper family motto "Pax mentis honestae gloria" [trans: "Peace of mind of an honest glory"] appears above the printed text "William Cowper Esqr. / Clerk of the Parliaments." The elder William Cowper served as Clerk of the British Parliament between 1716-1740.

William Cowper the poet composed short and eloquent verses, many of which were later set to music. His collaboration with curate John Newton (1725-1807) led to the 1779 publication of their "Olney Hymns," a collection of 348 hymns emphasizing evangelical tenets like forgiveness, sin, salvation, and damnation. The most famous of these hymns was "Amazing Grace."
