3. December 21, 1973: "Thank you for the beautiful Christmas card. I am so sorry about the sad news it brought. Today I received the most beautiful spring basket of pink carnations, pink roses and pink cymbidiums, and greens sprinkled with artificial snow…Thank you for being so good to me, and for making me very happy…" Signed "Love Joan." Accompanied by the original envelope, postmarked December 26.

Joan Crawford (born Lucille Fay LeSueur - 1908-1977) began her career as a dancer and debuted as a chorus girl on Broadway. In 1925 she signed a film contract with MGM in what would be the start of her six decade movie career. Her filmography ranged from melodramas and romantic comedies to film noir, musicals, and historical costume dramas, and she starred in eight films with leading man, Clark Gable. After her marriage to her fourth husband, Alfred Steele, Crawford became involved with Pepsi-Cola, where Steele was president of the company. Upon Steele's death, Pepsi elected Crawford to fill his vacant seat on the board of directors.

Ambrose DuBek (1916-2002) worked in Hollywood for many years as a costume and set designer in film and television. Although unusual for the period, DuBek identified as an openly gay man and would later publish a volume of gay materials titled "Lust Unearthed". Crawford's mention of "The Secret Storm" refers to an American soap ofera which ran from 1954 to 1974.
