William G. Fargo "In Memoriam" Broadside Announcing His Death

1p, measuring 11.75" x 17.5", New York, dated August 17, 1881. A black-bordered "In Memoriam" broadside printed by the American Express Company to acknowledge the death of William G. Fargo. The text was taken from the record of the proceedings of the Board of Directors, reading in part: "WHEREAS, death has again invaded the ranks of the veterans of the Express business, and taken from our midst in the fullness of his usefulness, WILLIAM G. FARGO, the honored and beloved President of our Company, to whose wise, prudent, and sagacious leadership is to be attributed a large proportion of the prosperity which not attends our organization. It is therefore, RESOLVED, That it is with a feeling of the deepest sadness that we present the following brief tribute to the memory of our departed President and personal friend…RESOLVED, That we tender to the bereaved widow and family of our departed friend our most sincere condolence and sympathy. The bitter parting here is but for the short span of time. Beyond the River will come the re-union which shall know no end. RESOLVED, That the Secretary transmit a copy of these resolutions to the family of the deceased. RESOLVED, That in respect to the memory of the deceased this Board do now adjourn." With flattened folds, light edge toning, and minor creasing and wear at the edges. A few small holes at the cross folds. Foxing on verso. Overall very good.

The American Express Company was originally founded in 1845 under the name of Wells & Co. The company was consolidated in 1850 with competing companies Livingston, Fargo & Company, and Wells, Butterfield & Company, to become American Express Company.
