No. 75 West 71st Street

Dear General Devins,

Excuse me for using your good old title which sounds to my ears more pleasing than Mr. Hon, or Judge; and it was as General Devins. I just saw you at Manchester opposite Richmond as we emerged from the dark land to the south bringing aloft the proud banner of Liberty, Justice and victory.

Your words of congratulations sent on my reaching the supposed age of discretion were most grateful and be assured they are received in the spirit in which they were written. In 1865 I was the old man and you a your enthusiastic brigadier - now according to Appleton’s cyclopedia you have nearly caught up, for it records your birth in the same year 1820 as myself. I have no doubt you will yet pass me in the span of life, because here in this great city - I am subjected to danger greater than those of the March & battle field or as Chauncy Depew said a few evenings ago after Howard Schofield and Slocum had boasted of following me to Atlanta, Savannah and Raleigh midst danger and tumult he had followed me for an equal if not a longer period through these campaigns of New York dinners.

I am to take life as easy as possible, but I suppose I must come to Boston next Summer as a delegate of Missouri to the national encampment of the G.A.R - a past compensation for which will be the pleasure of meeting you again as only old soldiers do meet -
Meantime believe me that I am proud to be held in your memory and affection.

Truly Yours,

W.T. Sherman
