Woodrow Wilson, recently retired President of Princeton University, had won the New Jersey gubernatorial election five days earlier, on November 8, 1910. Wilson defeated his principal rival, Republican candidate Vivian M. Lewis, by almost 10% of the popular vote.

Wilson's correspondent George McAneny (1869-1953) had congratulated him on the election results. McAneny was then President of the Borough of Manhattan, though he would later serve as the executive manager of the New York Times as well as New York City comptroller.

Wilson wrote in part:

"I particularly appreciate your kind letter of November 9th. It has given me deep pleasure. It certainly strengthens me for my future work that men like yourself should feel as you do about my election…"

Wilson had served as President of Princeton University between 1902 and October 1910. In January 1911, Wilson launched into his political life by becoming the Governor of New Jersey. The White House would follow three years later.
