Description:

Arnold Schoenberg
Brookline, MA, December 31, 1933
Unusual Arnold Schoenberg AMQS Just Months After Emigrating to America in 1933
AMQS

A very unusual autograph musical quotation signed by Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951), as "Arnold Schoenberg" near center right. Schoenberg has also inscribed and dated the "Autogramm" (German word for "autograph") as: "Brookline 31. XII. 33" underneath several neatly penned measures of one of his compositions. December 31, 1933. Brookline, Massachusetts. On pale pink stock paper with cropped corners. An additional three lines of music in different keys with the musical direction "con brio" can be found verso, almost certainly in Schoenberg's hand as well. Expected wear including a light paper clip impression touching the word "Brookline" recto. Mounting traces verso, else near fine. 5.5" x 2."

Schoenberg had fled Nazi persecution by emigrating to the United States just a few months before signing this autograph. The composer, professor, and musical theorist had had two strikes against him: he was Jewish, and he was a modernist whom the Nazis officially deemed as "degenerate." 1933 was a significant year in Schoenberg's life. Not only did he emigrate in that year, but he also reaffirmed his commitment to Judaism at around 60 years of age. Schoenberg taught at the Malkin Conservatory at Boston University in 1933-1934 before relocating to Los Angeles for his health in October 1934.
