Pete Seeger "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" AMQS, Complete With Leaf, Over 1' Long Fully Extended!
AMQS

An autograph musical quotation signed by beloved American folk artist Pete Seeger (1919-2014) as "Pete Seeger" at lower right. The large signature measures approximately 3.25" x 2.375" alone. Ca. March 9, 1983. [Beacon, New York.] Seeger has penned several measures of music, along with modified lyrics of his 1962 single, "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?", on the reverse side of a mustard-colored envelope fragment. Boldly inscribed in red felt tip marker as: "When will we ever learn?", being a modification of the song's chorus, "When will they ever learn?" The sketched out musical quotation measures approximately 15.75" x 6.25" from left to right. A red maple leaf is affixed at lower right. The reverse is hand-stamped with Pete Seeger's return address, and inscribed with the recipient's name and address in Johnson City, Tennessee. Postmarked and bearing a cancelled stamp. Expected wear and weathering including mounting traces. Overall the envelope fragment measures 17.5" x 8.875." Accompanied by an 8" x 10" glossy black and white photograph of Seeger playing his banjo, printed on HP Advanced photo paper.

"Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" was written by Seeger in October 1955. Seeger recounted later that the song was inspired by a traditional Cossack folk song, "Koloda-Duda," as referenced in Mikhail Sholokov's novel, "And Quiet Flows the Don". Additional verses of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" were added in 1960. The song was published in Sing Out! in 1962 and popularized by the Kingston Trio.

"Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" was a protest song par excellence, objecting to war as a callous waste of human and environmental resources. Seeger, who had become a popular radio performer in the 1940s, reemerged as a prominent protest musical singer in the turbulent 1960s. He advocated for disarmament, environmental conservation, and civil rights, among other causes.
