Warner writes to his mother from "Camp near Union Mills", in part and with original spelling retained: "...Saturday morning I had to go on piquet and did not get in till Sunday noon then I had my gun and clothes to clean and get ready for dress parade...my health is verry good now I have got a slight cold yet the weather has been verry bad for those haveing colds...the camp is all a stir to day getting ready to move I expect we will start for Centerville tomorrow morning. They had one of the company E's men paraded up and down the lines in front of the regiment last night with a shingle on his back marked "thief" followed by eight men with fixed bayonets...he stole a box with some medicine and a watch in it...they have got one of the garabaldias down to head quarters in close confinement with a ball and chain to his leg he has been tried for murder he killed his tent mate about two weeks ago..."

On page three, Warner pens "write to me" beside some doodles. At the letter's conclusion, he adds a short note in graphite dated March 25, 1863, from Centerville, and signs a second time as "E.A. Warner".
