Description:

Two Presidents TLSs: Nixon & Bush I

A small archive of two typed letters signed by two U.S. Presidents, 37th U.S. President Richard M. Nixon (1913-1994) and 41st U.S. President George H.W. Bush (1924-2018).

The lot consists of:

1. A 1p typed letter signed by Richard Nixon as "Dick" at lower right. Written in Washington, D.C. on February 15, 1957 on a single leaf of "Office of the Vice President / Washington" letterhead. Expected paper folds and a partial pencil erasure at upper left, else near fine. 6.5" x 8.5."

Richard M. Nixon, then Vice President in the Eisenhower administration, wrote this letter to Lawrence E. Spivak (1900-1994), the host, producer, and co-founder of the popular news program "Meet the Press." Nixon declined making an appearance on the show, citing a busy schedule which included an imminent 3-week-long trip to Africa.

Nixon traveled to Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, and Uganda between February 28-March 21, 1957. The major objectives of Nixon's Africa trip was to evaluate the stability of the region during the age of decolonization, and to gauge the susceptibility of the region to Communism. Nixon later summarized his findings in an official report entitled "The Emergence of Africa: Report to President Eisenhower by Vice President Nixon on His Trip to Africa" (1957).

2. A 1p typed letter signed by George H.W. Bush as "George" near center right. Written in Washington, D.C. on June 22, 1967 on a single leaf of "Congress of the United States / House of Representatives / Washington, D.C. 20515 / George Bush / 7th District, Texas / Member: Ways and Means Committee" letterhead. Docketed in red pencil at lower right. Expected paper folds, else near fine. 5.625" x 8.5."

George H.W. Bush addressed this thank you note to fellow Texas oilman Isaac "Ike" Arnold just six months after taking his seat in the House of Representatives. Bush would represent Texas's 7th district between January 1967 and January 1971.

Bush wrote in part: "Fred Chambers tells me you have made a donation to his fund to help out with our newsletter and travel expenses. This is a wonderful assist and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it…After all you have done in the past, Ike, this is just great."

C. Fred Chambers (1918-1989) was a Texas oilman and close Bush associate who would co-found several lucrative oil companies over his career. Chambers chaired the finance committee of Bush's unsuccessful 1970 Senate bid. Perhaps Chambers had been drafted in 1967 in a similar advisory capacity.
