A 1p typed letter signed by former 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) as "Harry S Truman" near center right. Dated August 24, 1956. On a single leaf of "Harry S. Truman / Federal Reserve Bank Building / Kansas City 6, Missouri" letterhead. Expected paper folds, and some marginal marks and tape residue along the edges resulting from previous matting, else near fine. 7.25" x 10.5." Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, business card, and sales receipt from Barb & John Pengelly Autographs (Hagerstown, Maryland.)

Ex-President Truman wrote this letter of apology to Italian-American Chicagoan Frank W. Chesrow (1903-1989), in part: "I am very sorry indeed that I was unable to attend the reception honoring His Excellency, former Premier of Italy Amintore Fanfani. My schedule in Chicago was so heavy that I missed most of the parties given there during the convention…"

Truman had attended the 1956 Democratic Convention in Chicago held between August 13-17, 1956. There, he opposed the successful nomination of Democratic Party presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson in favor of the underdog, Governor of New York W. Averell Harriman.

Italian politician Amintore Fanfani (1908-1999) was in between his first and second terms as Prime Minister of Italy during his state visit to the United States in August 1956. A Christian Democrat, Fanfani was allegedly the reason that future 35th U.S. President and devoted Catholic John F. Kennedy entered into politics; the pair would meet at the 1956 Democratic National Convention. Fanfani eventually served five non-consecutive terms as premier.

Frank Chesrow was a pharmacist and entrepreneur who became involved in city politics after his service during World War II. A Democrat, Chesrow served as trustee and later president of the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago.

Harry S. Truman served as president between 1945-1953.
