The Tucker Aviation Corporation was formed in 1940 by Preston Tucker, with the goal of manufacturing aircraft and marine engines. It would later become best known as the manufacturer of the Tucker 48 sedan, nicknamed the "Tucker Torpedo". However, production of the automobile was shut down in early 1948 when Tucker was accused of stock fraud. Preston Tucker was eventually acquitted on January 22, 1950, but the company took a massive hit and fell into obscurity.

Despite the outcome of the trial, speculation has continued with regard to the question of whether Tucker genuinely intended to produce a new car, or whether the entire enterprise was a sham, designed for the sole purpose of collecting funds from gullible investors. However, Tucker enthusiasts and collectors have amassed over 400,000 drawings, blueprints, corporate documents, and letters which they believe suggest that Tucker was, in fact, on track to mass-produce the Tucker 48.
