Description:

Truman Harry 1884 - 1972 A stunning content letter showing Truman using his Presidential power against McCarthyism. "...certain facts in the report of the Senate Subcommittee on Senator McCarthy" should be investigated, namely income tax irregularities.

Typed Letter Signed "Harry S Truman" as President, one page, 8" x 10.5". The White House, Washington, [September 1951]. In the form of a memorandum to Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snyder. Slight toning and light creases at right, else fine condition.

In full, "Attached is a copy of a telegram from William Benton which calls attention to certain facts in the report of the Senate Subcommittee on Senator McCarthy. I believe this telegram should be considered in connection with the investigation by your Department of the matters discussed in the Subcommittee's report."

In September 1951, Iowa Sen. Guy M. Gillette's Senate Subcommittee on Privileges and Elections launched an investigation of Senator Joseph McCarthy's financial entanglements and campaign practices. On September 28, 1951, Connecticut Sen. William Benton introduced ten "case studies" in support of his resolution to expel Sen. McCarthy from the Senate including a suspicious $10,000 fee from the Lustron Corporation and his income tax irregularities. Benton's telegram to President Truman undoubtedly was sent before he introduced his "case studies." Those relating to McCarthy's $10,000 fee and his income tax regularities would interest Snyder's Department of the Treasury. The Gillette Committee voted unanimously to investigate Benton's accusations. William Benton was Truman's Assistant Secretary of State from August 31, 1945 to September 30, 1947, and had served as U.S. Senator from Connecticut since December 17, 1949.
