Typed Letter Signed "Harry S. Truman," one page, 7.25" x 10.5". Kansas City, Missouri, December 17, 1956. To his former Secretary of the Treasury, John W. Snyder. Paper clip impression at top edge. Fine condition.

In full, "Thank you very much for the Christmas card. The ‰Û÷Boss' and I are deeply grateful to you for your thoughtfulness in remembering us. Back in 1939, if you recall, we had to give up the custom of sending cards because our list had grown by then to more than three thousand names. It was impossible to keep up with it, but we do appreciate receiving cards from our friends.

"I hope that everything is going well with you. Margaret told me that she had been to your party and had seen Louise Stewart there. She was also happy that Clif got a chance to shake hands with you. If business ever brings you to this part of the country, I hope you will spare some time for us to sit down and have a nice, long conversation."

The "Boss" was Truman's affectionate name for his wife, Bess. Margaret was their daughter and Clif, Cifton Daniel, was Margaret's husband. Louise Stewart was the mother of Robert Stewart, one of Margaret Truman's favorite dates in the 1940s and a Navy Lieutenant during World War II. Louise's husband Earle was one of Truman's closest friends. A Harvard alumnus, Robert was a graduate student at the Harvard School of Business Administration when he was killed in1948 in a plane crash in Pennsylvania. He was 27. President and Mrs. Truman and Margaret and three cabinet members including Treasury Secretary Snyder had attended his funeral and burial in Arlington National Cemetery.
