Three Satirical Methodist Prints, Hand Colored After George Woodward: 1807-1811
Archive
A group of three hand colored etchings originally drawn by George Woodward (1760-1809), a notable English caricaturist. Ranging in date from 1807 to 1811. Includes examples featured in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Wesley's Chapel, respectively. Each print has been matted and framed to an average size of 16" x 20". Exhibits varying degrees of darkened age toning and scattered soiling; minor creasing present throughout. Overall, very good.

The lot includes:

1.) "A Mistake at New-Market. Or Sport and Piety." Etching by Thomas Rowlandson. After Woodward and published by Thomas Tegg, London, 1807. The print shows a Methodist woman holding a volume of Wesley's Hymns as she approaches a jockey and inquires about "meetings" in town. Measures 13" x 9.5" (sight).

2.) "Sailors at a Methodist Sermon." Etching on paper. After Woodward and published by Walker in the Strand, 1807. The print depicts three sailors, one of which references the Old Bailey while the pastor warns of judgement day. Measures 13.5" x 9.75" (sight).

3.) "The Mischief of Methodism." Etching on paper. After Woodward and published by Thomas Tegg, London, 1811. The print satirizes two stereotypical preachers: a slender Methodist- somewhat reminiscent of a young John Wesley- and a rotund Anglican priest whose sermons are uninspiring. Measures 13.75" x 9.75" (sight).

George Murgatroyd Woodward, more commonly known as George "Moutard" Woodward, was an English caricaturist and humor writer. Widely published in "The Caricature Magazine" and elsewhere throughout the late 18th/early 19th century, his drawings were nearly all etched by others, primarily Thomas Rowlandson, but also Charles Williams, Isaac Cruikshank, and Piercy Roberts, among others.
