Ezekiel Cooper (1763-1847) was raised in the Church of England but became interested in Methodism at the age of 13, having been influenced by the preaching of Freeborn Garrettson, a leading Methodist preacher of the time. He was ordained a deacon in 1787 by Bishop Francis Asbury at John Street Church in New York City and by 1779 was appointed to run the Methodist Book Concern. Cooper was an ardent opponent of slavery and served as a minister in New York, Maryland, and Pennsylvania for 64 years.

Thomas Coke (1747-1848) was born in Wales and ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1772. He was introduced to Methodism through Mary Fletcher's writings and met John Wesley in August 1776. Upon joining the Methodists, he was expelled from the Anglican church, but he soon rose through the ranks to become one of the first General Superintendents of the Methodist Episcopal Church in America. Coke served as Wesley's assistant and is considered today the father of Methodist missions.

Francis Asbury (1745-1816) is often celebrated, along with John and Charles Wesley, as one of the founders of the Methodist Church. Born in Britain, he traveled to North America at the age of 22 and spread Methodism in British colonial America and the United States as part of the Second Great Awakening. During his 45 years in the colonies and the newly independent United States, he devoted his life to ministry, frequently traveling thousands of miles to spread the word to those living on the frontier. In December 1784, John Wesley named Asbury and Thomas Coke as co-superintendents of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States.
