Three Cdvs of Civil War Union Generals George McClellan, Ambrose Burnside & Nathaniel P. Banks

A handsome suite of three period black and white cartes de visites produced by the photographic studios of Frederick Gutekunst, and Edward and Henry T. Anthony, depicting three well-known Civil War generals: George B. McClellan (1826-1885); Ambrose Burnside (1824-1881); and Nathaniel P. Banks (1816-1894). Currently stored within an envelope pencil inscribed "War photos / valuable."

The lot is comprised of:

1. A Frederick Gutekunst carte de visite of George B. McClellan and his wife Mary Ellen "Nelly" McClellan (1836-1915), ca. 1863, entitled "Maj. Gen Geo. B. McClellan and Lady." Copyright information can be found along the bottom. An elegant backstamp reading "F. Gutekunst / Photographer, / 704 & 706 Arch St. / Phila." is found verso. Overall toning and isolated stains, else near fine. 2.375" x 4."

Frederick Gutekunst was a German-born photographer who established a photograph studio in Philadelphia in 1856. His business prospered during the Civil War, and he photographed both rank and file Union soldiers as well as high-profile generals like U.S. Grant. Gutekunst enjoyed considerable success after the Civil War, completing commissions for the Pennsylvania Railroad and the 1876 Centennial Exposition.

2. An Edward & Henry T. Anthony carte de visite of Ambrose Burnside, ca. 1865. The backstamp reads: "Published by / E & H.T. Anthony / 501 Broadway / New York / From Photographic Negative / in / Brady's / National Portrait Gallery." The cream-colored stock card is trimmed in gilt. Light toning and isolated discoloration verso, else near fine. 2.25" x 3.875."

3. An Edward & Henry T. Anthony carte de visite of Nathaniel P. Banks, ca. 1865, with identical backstamp and stock card characteristics to the one described above. Lightly pencil inscribed verso. Near fine. 2.25" x 3.875."

Edward Anthony (1818-1888) and older brother Henry T. Anthony (1814-1884) established the concern E. & H.T. Anthony & Company in 1852 in New York City. The company specialized in the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of camera equipment and supplies. Sponsors of Civil War photographer Mathew Brady, E. & H.T. Anthony received duplicate negatives of Brady's work, of which the Burnside and banks portraits are two examples.

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
