Description:

Civil War Archive Including PA Regiment Muster Rolls, Ordnance Inventory, and Expense Reports, ca. 1862-1866, 18 Pieces Total

An archive of Civil War-dated and -era military documents spanning from April 1862-August 1866, 18 pieces total, including muster rolls, ordnance inventories, and expense reports from the 7th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment, a unit attached to the Army of the Potomac. Most of the items in the archive were signed and retained by 1st Lieutenant John Deitrick (born 1842), a blacksmith from Liverpool, Perry County, Pennsylvania. Deitrick enlisted in Company B of the 7th Pennsylvania, but the records also indicate that he was later associated with Company K, 83rd Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. Deitrick was honorably discharged in June 1865. U.S. Congressional records from the 1910s and 1920s show that Deitrick (and later his widow) petitioned for back pay accrued six decades earlier! Very good to near fine condition, including expected stains, toning, creases/folds, water stains, ink smears, and foxing. The average size of the documents is 8" x 10." Items are currently stored in a black three-ring binder measuring 10.5" x 11.75" x 1.75."

The 7th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment saw action at the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, and the Wilderness. At the last battle mentioned, the entire regiment except for John Dietrick's Company B was taken prisoner; officers were used as human shields in Charleston and enlisted men were incarcerated at Anderson Prison.
